Amsterdam has one of the largest historic city centres in the world, full of historic monuments and has developed into one of the most interesting cities for contemporary architecture with new innovative developments in its former harbour, old industrial neighbourhoods and on man made islands In the early 20th century many buildings were built in the Amsterdam School style. More recently the city has rediscovered the banks of the river IJ, North Amsterdam and the South axis, where many impressive and innovative new buildings are being built. We can organise tours in all areas and can create itineraries focussing on themes such as housing, culture, infrastructure, transport, sustainability, adaptive re-use, public realm & sustainability.

Almere Tours

Almere is one of The Netherlands's youngest and fastest growing cities. Built on the reclaimed polder landscape this city has continuously experimented with new and different ways of living. This has resulted in a diverse selection of housing typologies and often remarkable architecture. The city centre has been developed according to the masterplan of OMA and showcases buildings by numerous international architects Our will give you an insight into the development of this unique city and its surroundings. During our tour we will visit buildings by amongst others: SANAA, S333, , Gigon Guyer, Christian de Portzamparc and David Chipperfield.

Amsterdam Docklands

Amsterdam’s Docklands are internationally regarded as one of the prime examples of inner city docklands redevelopment. This former harbour area has been transformed into an extremely pleasant and comfortable residential area with high quality houses and apartments, shared public space and waterfronts. Our architectural tour of the eastern & western docklands showcases innovative urban planning, a wealth of housing typologies, worlds class architecture all within the historic docklands just a stone's throw from the historic city centre of Amsterdam. Urban planners West 8 devised a radical master plan for the area of Borneo Sporenburg. A mix of high density low rise housing, iconic superblocks and bridges create an attractive living area overlooking the harbour basins On the KNSM island existing structures and artist studio's are mixed with high density housing blocks. The Java Islands features lush communal gardens and Amsterdam's youngest canals. The adjacent Funen Park is a fantastic example of living in a park like communal outdoor space which is completely car free

Utrecht Tours

Utrecht lies in the heart of the Netherlands, and offers a wide range of Dutch architecture, from the new station area, its beautiful historic city centre, the influential Rietveld House, to its cutting edge university campus with projects by many renowned Dutch offices. Utrecht Station Area & City Centre | Modern Architecture in the Context of Medieval Structures We also offer guided tours of Utrecht’s inner city and new developments in the station area, which features many structures from the middle ages as well as a number of contemporary buildings and infrastructure such as a bike storage for 12,500 bicycles. The Uithof | Modern Masterplanning and Dutch Architecture on Display This tour offers a great insight of The Uithof campus area of among other Utrecht University which is the largest university in The Netherlands. At The Uithof, also called Utrecht Science Park, you will see a broad pallet of Dutch architecture, ranging from 1960’s brutal concrete structures to contemporary Dutch architecture. In the mid 1980’s the progressive architecture office OMA by Rem Koolhaas designed a new masterplan for The Uithof. This has lead to a transformation of The Uithof and today amazing pieces of Dutch architecture by among other OMA, Neutelings Riedijk Architecten, UNStudio, Mecanoo and Wiel Arets can be seen.

Housing & Public Realm 

The Netherlands has a long tradition in building high faulty housing and public realm; from the exuberant Amsterdam social housing to people centred high density cities. We can create a custom to showcasing the most interesting examples of housing and/or public realm in all Dutch cities.

Amsterdam IJburg

IJburg is Amsterdam's newest residential district which is being built on several man made islands in the IJ-lake, each with their own character. This ambitious plan is designed to have a positive impact on the local ecology and features an intricate water-management system as well as a nature and recreation area built on a former industrial garbage dump. The islands are served by a high speed tram link through the longest underwater tunnel in The Netherlands. IJburg is the latest city district of Amsterdam and is built on man-made islands. This ambitious project is still under construction, only 3 of the total of 7 islands have been so far completed. However IJburg already is attracting many visitors due to its many innovative housing projects by renowned architecture firms. Along with Almere , IJburg is a true laboratory for new forms of living. This is the first island of IJburg was designed as a test case for new forms of residential development. and features a "water neighbourhood" of prefabricated floating houses and custom designed floating villas. The island also has a large neighbourhood of owner developed houses that are not bound by aesthetic regulations and showcase a huge variety in architecture and construction methods including passive houses and timber and straw bale construction. The largest Island of IJburg and features innovative mixed use city blocks designed by leading Dutch architects with large variety of semi-public courtyard spaces as well as new "zoning free" multi-purpose buildings. It also accommodates the main commercial centre as well as an artificial harbour and large urban beach with public amenities. A series of smaller islands to the south have larger terraced houses and villas facing directly onto the water. The area functions as a green lung for the entire development and also features leisure and sport facilities. This tour also offers a great opportunity to gain an insight into the unique Dutch culture of land building and water management. As part of the tour the innovative method of construction the new islands will also be explained.
